Did you know that Texas boasted it's very own Stonehenge? Neither did I until recently. This landmark is not far from San Antonio and it all started in 1989 when Doug Hill tipped a massive limestone rock on end in Al Sheppard's field. After looking at the rock and joking about it for months the two decided to build an arch behind the rock to make it more visible to passers by. Once the arch was built it reminded Al of the original Stonehenge in England. He commissioned Doug and the rest as they say is history. It is not a replica, but about 2/3 the size of the original and is not oriented to the sun, as is the original. It took nine months to build. Also on site are two copies of the mysterious statuary of Easter Island. Al passed away in 1994; since his death his family and friends have maintained the statuary and grounds. And there you have it - a little known tourist spot in Texas, just one of many. Stay tuned for more!
